{"id":26545,"title":"The Essential Autoroute Playlist","description":"10 classic songs from the Francophilia car stereo.","content":"<p>I can\u2019t help but love traversing the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autoroutes_of_France\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>French autoroute network<\/u><\/a>, so allow me (if you will) to indulge myself a little and spend the next few moments reminiscing\u00a0about some of my favourite cross-channel musical moments.\u00a0So why not\u00a0grab a quick glass of ros\u00e9, a crusty baguette and a healthy helping of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morbier_(cheese)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>morbier<\/u><\/a> before sitting back and imagining yourself topping up the driver\u2019s tan\u2026<\/p><p><strong>1. Nino Ferrer \u2013 <em>La Rua Madureira<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nino_Ferrer\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Nino Ferrer<\/u><\/a> was a French-Italian singer who shot to fame in the late sixties on the back of a number of bossa-nova inspired singles. The street in the title can be found in the centre of Rio De Janeiro and the lyrics contain other references to the area which inspired the music itself.<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/flsqODYRKOI\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>2. Sebastien Tellier \u2013 <em>La Ritournelle<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A9bastien_Tellier\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Sebastien Tellier<\/u><\/a> is arguably most famous for his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A0D0ZxjpbkM\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>2008 entry into the Eurovision song contest, <\/u><em><u>Divine<\/u><\/em><\/a>. The song caused much controversy in his home nation as the lyrics were predominantly in English. The song eventually totalled a mere 47 points in the competition although I might consider that\u00a0as something of a badge of honour!<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/crblDrrcunQ\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>3. Air \u2013 <em>La Femme D\u2019Argent<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>No gallic playlist could be complete without something from one of France\u2019s most successful modern musical exports. The video here is an alternative version of the song featured on their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moon_Safari\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Moon Safari <\/u><\/a>album and contains a number of interesting snippets about its conception.\u00a0<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Vxxn_YnLQ4\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>4. Jacques Dutronc \u2013 <em>Les Cactus<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_Dutronc\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Jacques Dutronc<\/u><\/a> rose to prominence in the 60s but still works in both music and films today. <em>Les Cactus\u00a0<\/em>is one of his earlier efforts and has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZJknWGiyQMw\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>covered <\/u><\/a>by a number of artists since including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanessa_Paradis\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Vanessa Paradis <\/u><\/a>who was clearly seduced by the\u00a0simple sentiment at it\u2019s heart; \u201cThe whole world\u00a0is a cactus, it\u00a0is impossible to sit down.\u201d<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E05SSymMvdY\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>5. Arthur H<\/strong> \u2013 <strong><em>Le Chercheur d\u2019Or<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>I suspect a strong diet of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gitanes\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Gitanes<\/u><\/a> was essential to cultivating such a unique vocal, and the jacket in the video really should be a fundamental part of anyone\u2019s wardrobe. The song (the gold miner) is an enlightening tale of gangrene, lost limbs\u00a0and misery (but with a cheerful delivery at least).<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gvyd2QfRey0\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>6. Toma \u2013 <em>Facile<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>I don\u2019t know an awful lot about either this song or the artist, other than to say that I came across it via Nova Tunes 0.9. Nova Tunes is a bi-annual compilation from independent French radio station, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.novaplanet.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Radio Nova<\/u><\/a>, that is largely responsible for introducing me to number of new sounds. So, if you\u2019re anywhere near Le Mans, Nantes, Montpellier, Paris, Brest, Boulogne , Beauvais, Melun, Agen, Limoges, Pau, Avignon or Clermont Ferrand (phew!) then I would encourage you to check it out.<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Cm49MBvGkM\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>7. Maurice Ravel \u2013<em> Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Ravel\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Joseph-Maurice Ravel<\/u><\/a> was a French composer who rose to prominence in the early twentieth century. He is perhaps best known for his orchestral work, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q4wb11w0ZHQ\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Bolero<\/u><\/a>. Ravel, however, was not at all enamoured with\u00a0his work, and once refered to it sneeringly as a \u201cpiece for\u00a0orchestra without music\u201d.\u00a0 This piece, (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pavane_pour_une_infante_d%C3%A9funte\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><u>\u2018Pavane for a Dead Princess\u2019<\/u><\/em><\/a>) was written as an evocation of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pavane\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>pavane<\/u><\/a> (a slow processional dance) that a little princess might have danced in a Spanish court.<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2_c8JRCKq1A\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>8. Louise Attaque \u2013 <em>Les Nuits Parisi\u00e8nnes<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Formed in 1994, the name of the band means \u2018Louise attacks\u2019\u00a0and is a reference to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louise_Michel\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Louise Michel<\/u><\/a>, a 19th century <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anarchist\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>anarchist<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0For an alternative video click <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BW89mAREYDg&amp;feature=BFa&amp;list=AL94UKMTqg-9Ahb0X38T8Qg4DVfgMUbZ4D\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>here<\/u><\/a>!<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WOnoVt9QYQQ\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>9. Troublemakers \u2013 <em>Get Misunderstood<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Despite the anglophone name and lyrics, the Troublemakers are an innovative electro group from the backstreets of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marseille\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Marseilles<\/u><\/a>. Whilst the beginning of this track\u00a0sounds like they were having a lunchtime chat with the microphones turned on, it adds to the charm.<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uj1QwRAs_Tw\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><strong>10. Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin \u2013 <em>Je t\u2019aime\u2026moi non plus<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Hmm, no introduction required I guess.<\/p><div data-youtube-video=\"\"><iframe class=\"youtube\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GlpDf6XX_j0\"><\/iframe><\/div><p>Et voila! We\u2019d be delighted to hear your thoughts; what is the best music from France? Why no <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WUMcVqXVp7I\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Joe Le Taxi<\/u><\/a>?
